Meet OPA borrower, Rene!

The Transformative Power of U.S. Citizenship

Rene M.’s story is a powerful example of how citizenship strengthens families and communities. Originally brought to the U.S. as a baby from Mexico, Rene’s family returned permanently through the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986. For decades, he remained a permanent resident—until love, family, and purpose inspired him to take the final step towards citizenship.

In 2024, with two children and a baby girl on the way, Rene and his wife sought greater security for their growing family, aware that the future of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program was becoming increasingly uncertain. Research led Rene to One Percent for America (OPA). With the help of an OPA 1% interest loan, Rene was able to apply for citizenship right away without sacrificing his family’s financial stability.

Building a Secure Future for His Family

In less than 90 days, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services reviewed Rene’s application, and soon after, he had his naturalization appointment and swearing-in ceremony. With that, Rene was able to vote for the first time in his life, and he has already proudly served on a jury —   experiences that deepened his connection to the country he’s called home for decades.

Thanks to Rene becoming a citizen through OPA, his wife was able to apply for and receive her Green Card. With a renewed sense of security and opportunity, Rene and his family are grateful to have made progress in their citizenship journeys; they encourage other immigrants to do the same.

“I waited over 20 years. Don’t wait. With OPA’s support, you can take that step—today.”

Today, Rene is a hospital project manager in Chicago, working on initiatives that directly impact community health. When the Illinois governor called on healthcare systems to support arriving migrants, Rene led a team to convert a clinic into a care hub. “As an immigrant myself, it was an honor to welcome others and make sure they received the care they needed—especially the children.”

“I loved the entire process, and it turns out, it was rather easy and straightforward. I feel proud now to fulfill my duty as a citizen and play an integral role in my community.”
