1. Decide Whether to Apply Online or by Mail
Form N-600 can be filed online or by mail. To file online, you must create a USCIS online account. Filing online allows you to upload documents, pay fees, and track your case digitally. If you prefer to file by mail, download the latest version of the form from uscis.gov/n-600
Note: You cannot file online if you are requesting a fee waiver.
2. Confirm your Eligibility for N-600 USCIS Citizenship Form
You may file Form N-600 if:
You were born outside the U.S. and are claiming U.S. citizenship through a U.S. citizen parent, or
You automatically became a U.S. citizen after birth but before turning 18, and meet all legal requirements
Certain adopted children under the age of 18 at the time adoption is finalized.
If a child under the age of 18 falls into one of these categories, a parent may file the N-600 on their minor child’s behalf.
Who Should Not File Form N-600
- You were born in the U.S. (you’re already a citizen)
- You became a citizen through naturalization
- You do not have at least one biological or adoptive parent who is a U.S. citizen
- You’re replacing a lost certificate (use Form N-565)
- You already have a valid U.S. passport
3. Gather Required Documents for your N-600 U.S Citizenship Application
You must submit evidence to support your claim of U.S. citizenship. This may include:
- Your birth certificate
- Your parent’s U.S. citizenship evidence (e.g., naturalization certificate, U.S. passport)
- Your green card or proof of lawful permanent residence
- Marriage certificate of your parents (if applicable)
- Proof of legal and physical custody (if claiming citizenship after birth)
- Adoption decree (if adopted)
- If applying from outside the U.S., you must submit two passport-style photos.
All documents in a foreign language must include a certified English translation
4. Decide if You Need Representation
You may choose to have an attorney or accredited representative help with your application. If so, submit Form G-28 with your N-600.
5. Calculate and Include Fee Payment
The current filing fee for Form N-600 is listed on the USCIS Fee Schedule. You may pay by:
- Credit card (Form G-1450, if filing by mail)
- Check or money order
- Online payment (if filing online)
- Fee waivers may be available using Form I-912, but only if filing by mail.
6. Prepare for Biometrics (if required)
USCIS may require you to attend a biometric services appointment. If so, you'll receive a notice with the date, time, and location.
7. Determine if You Need an Interview
Not all applicants are interviewed. If you are under 18, your U.S. citizen parent must attend the interview with you unless waived.
8. Submit Your N-600 U.S. Citizenship Application
Double-check that:
- You’ve signed the form
- All documents are included
- You’re using the most updated version of the form
- You’ve included the correct filing fee (remember this is different if you’re filing online or by mail.)
9. After Filing
If approved, you'll receive a Certificate of Citizenship. If you're over 14, you may be required to take the Oath of Allegiance.
